WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits

The WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits (formerly, the Advanced Certificate in Wines and Spirits)

Who should attend?

The course is open to students who hold the WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits or can demonstrate the equivalent knowledge. It is strongly recommended that students complete the Intermediate Certificate before progressing to the Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits.

How will you benefit?

This qualification provides detailed analysis of the principal wines and spirits of the world. Students will also benefit from in-depth tastings where they will learn to identify product style and quality. All sessions on this course normally include tastings.

Outline Programme

Unit 1 - Wines and Spirits of the World

  • Production of Wine (location, viticulture, vinification, maturation and bottling, labelling regulations)
  • France, Italy, Spain & Portugal
  • Bordeaux and the South-West of France
  • Germany, Central and South Eastern Europe
  • South Africa
  • Australia and New Zealand
  • North, South and Central America
  • Sparkling Wines of the World
  • Liqueur (Fortified) Wines
  • Spirits and Liqueurs of the World
  • Information and advice for customers and staff

Unit 2 - Wine Tasting

  • Systematic Approach to Tasting - how to taste wines and evaluate the quality, style and price

To gain the Level 3 qualification, candidates will be required to:

Successfully complete:

Unit 1

  • a multiple choice paper of 50 questions
  • a question paper requiring short written answers

Unit 2

  • an internally set and assessed blind tasting of two wines

(Course material, instruction and WSET® examination in the English language).

Required prior  knowledge: WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits or equivalent.
Guided learning hours: It is recommended that a student should allocate a minimum of 84 hours of study to successfully complete the full programme of two units. The hours will usually be a combination of taught and private study time. It is recommended that the teaching delivery time for the programme should not be less than 28 hours.

 

Learning outcomes

at the end of this course, the candidate will be capable of:

  • explain the key factors influencing the production of the principal wines and spirits of the world and how those factors influence the style, quality and price
  • describe in detail the characteristics of the principal wines and spirits of the world
  • use knowledge of the principal wines and spirits of the world to make recommendations to customers in a variety of situations
  • apply the principles of food and wine matching to the key styles of wine available
  • by the use of the WSET® Systematic Approach to Tasting, produce tasting notes and use the information contained within them to identify the style, quality and price band of wines and spirits
  • provide information for customers and staff on the health issues relating to wines and spirits
  • provide information and advice for customers and staff on the correct storage and service of wines and spirits
Progression Routes:
Upon successful completion of the WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits, the student may progress to the following qualifications:
WSET® Level 2 Award in Spirits WSET® Level 2 Award in Spirits offers a greater breadth and depth of knowledge in the specific area of spirits and liqueurs than that offered by the broader-based Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits. It offers focused coverage of all product categories in the field of spirits, end use of the identified products together with the basic tasting technique.
WSET® Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits The WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits is required for progression to the WSET® Level 4 Diploma in Wines and Spirits.
