Level 1 Award in Wine Service
This qualification aims to provide the basic skills in customer service and service of wine to prepare a person for their first job in hospitality. It provides a foundation in the basic skills required by all wine service staff and sommeliers.
The course builds on the knowledge and skills developed in the WSET Foundation Certificate in Wines, and shows how these can be used in the workplace.
The course is also suitable for people already employed in the hospitality industry who wish to be introduced in a structured way to wine service in a restaurant setting.
Qualification objectives
On completion of the core units, a candidate will be able to:
- Describe the roles and career paths available within wine service
- Define customer service
- Discuss some elements that enhance customer service
- Prepare yourself for service
- Use key pieces of equipment that are important for wine service
- List, and follow the steps in the order of service
- Open and serve still and sparkling wines to customers
- Use information on wine labels to describe wine styles to customers.
To gain the Level 1 Award in Wine Service qualification candidates will be required to:
Complete a programme of training delivered by a WSET® Level 1 Approved Programme Provider
Successfully complete: a practical problem based learning exercise under examination conditions
- A demonstration of wine service skills in a short role-play based on a typical restaurant scenario

It is recommended that the teaching time for the foundation programme is no less than 6 hours and should be no more than 9 hours. |

This qualification offers broad coverage of all product categories in the field of alcoholic drinks, together with a more detailed tasting technique.
